Social Work Department

The department was formerly known as the Child Care Division, founded in 1967, and was renamed the Social Work Division in 1973.  It was the only social work academic program in Taiwan at that time, and was a three-year program.  In 1991, the school was upgraded from a three-year college to a four-year university and the division was renamed the Department of Social Work and was a four-year program.Graduates are awarded bachelor degrees.  In 2006, a master’s degree program was established, and graduates will be awarded Master of Social Work upon graduation.  In the past 50 years, more than 5,000 alumni have graduated from the programs, and they all play very important roles in the field of social work practice.  Currently there are three different programs, undergraduate full-time day school, undergraduate full-tme night school, and full-time graduate school.  The enrollment now is more than 600.

The department emphasizes on the combinations of theories and practices, and has established long-term cooperative relationships with more than 800 domestic social welfare organizations in various professional fields.  The undergraduate students need to finish the 480-hour social work practicum in order to graduate which is among one of the most rigorous social work programs in Taiwan.  The graduate school students, on the other hand, will have to finish 320-practicum hours.  Our alumni all have excellent proformance in clinical fields and are the priority for social welfare agengies to consider once they have job opportunities.  The department pays special attentions to students’ diversity in learning and tries to expand their international perspectives.  Each year, the department provides overseas practicum opportunities to junior-year students.  Various workshops and seminars are often held on campus to enhance students’ learning opportunities. More and more graduates continue their advanced study in social work both domestically and overseas.  Meanwhile, taking the licensure examination held by the government is a must-do for most of the senior-year students once they graduate.  Many of our alumni become licensed social workers.  They perform well in all respects.
