Introduction

The Social Work Department in Shih-Chien University was founded in 1967.  Being the first and the only school which offered social work professional program at that time in Taiwan, the department of social work emphasized heavily on practice-oriented curriculum.  The vision is to help students foster positive attitudes with passion in pursuing social change.  Students are educated with new knowledge in eclectic approach and trained to be familiarized with social work practice skills.   They are encouraged to commit themselves to professional social work as their careers.  In 2006, the social work graduate program was established.  Students in graduate program are trained with theory-based knowledge and advanced clinical techniques to prepare themselves as supervisors or managers in social welfare-related organizations once they complete the program.  Currently the full-time faculty members include 2 full professors, 5 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, and 2 lecturers.  The department also recruits many experts with clinical experiences as part-time faculties to further expand students’ vision and promote competency.

Over 3,500 alumni have graduated from the department since its founding.  Among them, more than 70% took social work as their career.  As the first professional social work program in Taiwan, the department of social work in Shih-Chien University continues to seek students who demonstrate a commitment to social change through work experiences, academic endeavors, and extracurricular or community services.  We hope to be the best social work undergraduate- and graduate-school in Taiwan and cultivate excellent professional social workers for the ever-changing society.
